The survivor only knew that there was a sudden bump and he found himself in the bucket alone. Inspectors deposed that they had never seen a better equipped or more carefully worked shaft. The solutions suggested were that the men attempted to change places, or one became suddtpiiy ill. A verdict of accidental death was returned, the jury adding a rider that all persons using shafts should undergo a periodical medical examination.

An explosion of fire-damp occurred in the Torbaulea Colliery. Five man' —Griggs, Johnstone, Gamine, and two Houstons, father and son—were dreadfully burned. Johnstone, Griggs and Houston, jun., are dead.
