A FARMERS ' YEAR BOOK.
A very useful and convenient little “ Year Book for 1899-1900 ” has just been issued by the Christchurch Meat Company, which has thereby added another to the many services it has done for New Zealand farmers. Instructions are given forthe use of fertilisers, and an article on the Chemistry of Fertilisers is one of the most valuable contributions to a knowledge of this important subject that has yet been published, and for this article alone the “Year Book” should be obtained and read by every farmer. Definitions of the- terms applied to the various classes of manures are-also given. Directions for-ascertaining the weaglit of cattle and the freezing weights of sheep and lambs, derived. 1 from actual experience, are riven, and trustworthy information on this vexed question will be appreciated by farmers. The various brands used by the company at Islington and Sinithfield for meat for export, and also for meat intended, for local use, as well as those placed on any carcases which may fail to pass the rigid examination of the Government veterinary inspectors, are reproduced, and •.re an indication of the care with which he meat is examined and graded. A paper >y the Hon R. W. Best, Minister of Lauds -or Victoria, on “ The Pastoral Industry in Vow Zealand,” is very interesting, and a iescription of the results-of the various exicriments in manuring and cultivation at ho company’s Islington farm conveys a ■ cful hint in-almost-every line. Notes on '>ec Planting, and a mass of miscellaneous .formation complete the contents of tliis
e.-.t little work, which has been gob up :i a particularly .attractive form by-the ‘ Lyttelton Times ” -Company.
