SLY GROG-SELLING.
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19. A deputation numbering about forty persons was introduced to the Premier this afternoon by Mr Thomson, member for Clutha. The denotation, which included Messrs Pirani, Taylor, Smith and M’Nab, members of the House of Representatives, asked that the law prohibiting the sale of liquor should be more stringently administered at Balclutha, pointing out the case of a boarding-houp-keeper who, fbr a first offence for selling liquor without a license was fined £SO, only £lO for a second and £ls for a third. The Premier replied that it was not the duty of the Government to interfere with the administration of the law, and that he had every confidence in the integrity of the Magistrate who imposed the fines, and in his independence. If anyone felt aggrieved, the law provided the usual remedy.
