WOOLSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It is such thankless work nowadays contradicting misrepresentations that till I. saw Councillor Thomas’s letter this morning on the above subject I had decided to take no notice of the report as given in your Tuesday’s issue. There is nothing absolutely untrue in the report, but its tenor is such that any-ratepayer reading it would conclude that Councillors -Thomas and Tanner-were a couple of “ pemicketty ” fellows who were in opposition to all the rest of the Council, and this conclusion is utterly false. The facts . are these: —The Mayor laid before the Council a small account incurred in driving voters to the poll during the recent loan proceedings, which, had not been authorised by the Council, and which the Finance Committee declined to recommend for payment. Councillor Lord moved that the account be paid, and was supported on a division by Councillors Garland and Gimblett. Councillors Thomas, Milne, Hobson and myself spoke against it and voted against it, and the Mayor then gave his deliberative vote for it, making the numbers equal, and his casting vote in the same way, thus making a majority, of one in favour of payment, and declared it carried. One member declined to vote. This account of the matter is very different from what appeared in your Tuesday’s report, and it has the advantage of being strictly true.—l am, etc., W. W. TANNER. Woolston, May 25.
