VISIT TO CHEVIOT. , [From Our CopjiEspriiJDENf.] CHEVIOT, May 11. The firm W. Hall-Jones, accompanied by Mr Gavin, engineer, arrived here froiri Waipafa, at 5.30 p.m. The trip was anything but pleasant, as heavy rain fell almost incessantly, and the journey hacf to be made ih an open buggy. On arrival at Cheviot the party was met by Mr 6. Forbes, president of the Cheyiot Settlers’ Association, and Messrs J. Gibson, J. Briggs, Jenkins and H. Allen, who requested that the erection of a. bridge Over the Waiau, and the construction, rif the railway line from Waipara to Cheviot, should he proceeded with. The Minister stated that arrangements were now being made to enable $ survey of the line to be commenced n.exfc week. Mr Gavin* who made a survey of a route through the Cheviot Estate in 1895, had, during the day, pointed-out the probable route of the railway from Waipara, and the Minister promised to consider‘the matter when the Estimates were being prepared this year. The party will leave at 8 a.m; to-morrow for Kaikoura. The Minister, was much inir pressed with what he saw of the estate, which surpassed anything he anticipated.
