DRAINAGE BOARD.

A meeting of the Christchurch Drainage ' Board was held yesterday afternoon; present —Messrs J, Deans (chairman), R. M.. Taylor, W. E. Samuels, E. Smith, C. Bur- ■ gess, J. Down and G. MTntyre. The. Secretary- and .Treasurer reported the following items of finance -. —Amount of rates received from April 8 to May 6 £512 12s sd, ■ amount received from other sources £442 . 45.10 d, amount of expenditure £1035 18s 3d, amount of 1897 rates outstanding £B2 6s Bd, amount of 1898 rates outstanding £424 7s 2d, amount of 1898 rates collected £19,526 16s 9d, credit balance at the bank £lslß 3a 3d. The report was adopted. The Engineer reported that the Tuam' Street sewer- works had been completed, at a cost of £IOO6 7s ; there was a balance duo from the Lin wood Borough Council to the Board of £278 13s 6d. The foreman had complained of the increased nuisance at the farm. A new settling pond was urgently needed, and the inspector asked for authority to put the work in hand ; the cost would be about £SO. Other minor works had' been attended to. The report was adopted, and authority was-given for the formation of a liew pond.. Permission was granted to the owners of Block 326, Heathcote, Road District, who proposed to make a road through, the block, to put in pipes in place, of an open drain, which, 'ran beside the position of the proposed read ; the work to btvdone-to the satisfaction of the Board’s engineer. The Auditor-Generali wrote, stating that in his opinion,' the Board 'would not be justified in paying the salary of the late Inspector, Mr Gaudin, for any period after The date of his death. The City Surveyor wrote requesting the Board to pipe an open, drain on, the western side of Windsor Terrace, Richmond., The application was refused. The Woolstdn Borough: Council) wroteask-' ing why its borough was so much more highly rated than the Sydenham borough. The Surveyor was requested to supply tha information. The Secretary to the Plumbers and Gasfitters’ .Union wrote regarding the question of instruction, and examination for licenses under the Board. The Board decided to disapprove of the practice of the same person acting as both instructor and examiner. Accounts amounting .-to £1035 18s 3d were passed for payment. ■ It was decided that all permits for shooting on. the Board’s farm should bo withdrawn, for the present. ‘ A deputation, consisting of Mr T. H. Davey (Mayor) and Councillors Barlow and Money, representing the St Albans Borough Council, and Messrs G. Capper and H. E. , Lonsdale, representing residents in the horough, waited on the Board with regard to I a drain in Edgeware Road. The deputation I Stated that' an agreement as to piping the drain had already .been come to, but the piping had been found to be inefficient.... • The deputation now asked that the Board should agree to pay two-thirds of the cost of a covered drain. Mr Capper, for' the ratepayers, stated that the sum of £25 had already been collected from residents in the neighbourhood towards the cost of the work, 1 It was decided that the Board should pay two-thirds of the total cost of the work, less the'amount of private subscriptions. The deputation thanked the Board ans withdrew.
