CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOWS.
The annual village chrysanthemum show was held at Eiccarton on Friday. Messrs Anstey and Bishop, the judges, pronounced ' the show an improvement as ' regarded quality on those of previous years. The baskets were highly commended, and some of the. blooms, - especially Mrs Cowan’s 'exjhihit, .were very good. The prize-takers ' were Mesdames Bowen, Cowan and Winter and-Messra 1 Hay ton,-Bowman, A. Wilson, • -Johnajan»and Lang. Mr. sent a •flne exMbit of : out blooms, The'children’s Srizei* were obtained by'E. 'Cotton; ,-J. Engfcb; Mabel Brake 1 and P. and M. 'A; Hay. 'Many other prizes, were awarded for baskets and bouquets. ' The annual show of the Timaru Chrysanthemum Club was held on Saturday. It was not so large as some previous shows, bub the average quality of the exhibits was good.' In the open class Mr"‘J. Lewis was ... chief prize-taker. Two Christchurch competitors'took prizes, Mr Beckett one first and Mr Purser one second. In the amateurs’ ' class thhre was more competition, and an excellent lob of blooms were sent in. The ■ .prize cards were evenly distributed among local growers, and Mr Purser took two "firsts' ahd -Mr Carmichael'two seconds.
