WELLINGTON NEWS.
[Per Press' Association.] WELLINGTON, May 6. Mr Earnshaw, formerly a member for Dunedin, will contest Wellington in the Opposition interests. oThe Union Steamship Company has filed a counter claim, seeking to reduce wages by 10s per month, but negotiations are still going on, and there is some chance of a settlement without recourse to the Conciliation Board. The Education Department has withheld £175 from Victoria College on the ground that though tuition began on April 8 notice was not received till April 17. Under the Act no part of the subsidy is payable from April 1 until the Minister of Education reports that proper tuition is being afforded, but the Council urges that owing to the professors not arriving till April 1, and the intervention of the Easter holidays, they could not get to work within the time prescribed.
