Tii- sh-amer Wakanui, of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s fleet, one of the largest .■.-ocean -ateamprs visiting the-port, was placed in ihe graving dock’on Saturday. The blocks ou thu floor of the dock had to be specially raised to enablo the huge direct liner to b-s docked without her bilge touching the Side of the-clock. During the day a large number of people visited the dock. A glance at the vessel from the floor of the dock at once showed where the modem "ocean tramp” gets her immense parrying capacity. The floor pf the vessel appears to extend almost her extreme length, and runs into the almost perpendicular sides at a very acute angle. The barque John Gambles,. which bumped at Timaru on" Saturday, will come on to Lyttelton, and go into the graving dock. The vessel is tinder charter to Messrs 'Kaye ans Carter, to load grain for the United Kingdom. The New Zealand 'Shipping Company’s steamer Wakanui Was placed in the graving dock on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of undergoing an examination to her hull below water lino. The vessel had been leaking slightly in No. 3 hold, owing to a few' loose rivets. These will be tightened up, and the vessel will probably come out of dock to-morrow. On Saturday the departure of the steamer? Rotomahana, Flora, Ghau, Ribston, Runtime and Waiwera, and the shifting of the Wakanui into , the graving dock, left the berthage space comparatively empty. The direct liner lonic, due at Wellington yesterday, has some 500 tons of merchandise ■ for this port. . The steamer Poherua arrived vesteniay morning from Westport with a full load cf coal. , Reports by mail from New York, via Loni don, have been received stating that Messrs Cramp and Sons, of Philadelphia, who were .awarded the contract of building the three new steamers for the Sydney-Sau Francisco service, had laid the keel of the first of tie

trio. The steamers are to have a guaranteed speed of 17 knots and to be of GOOO it-no gross measurement each.' Tho Mariposa and , Alameda, at present running, wore built by Cramp and Sons in 1883, and have done splendid service. They are classed as iHJcnot steamers and of 3168 tons ■ register, so that'the new ships will have two knots more speed and ho nearly double tho size of tho ■ vessels now performing tho service—important . inferences' in expediting the delivery of the nails. ’sS■ -!! : iij■,i;^ts'i '-■■■■■:'i'i'■

Mr C. H. Humphries, purser of the Miowera, retires from the service on the arrival of the' vessel at Vancouver. Ha has for twenty-two years been associated with Australasian shipping, fourteen years of which were under the flag of the Union Company. He proposes to settle down in England. . The grain ’ships in port are filling up slowly, the Loch Torridon, loading on account of the New Zealand Shipping Company, being, perhaps, the most forward af the fleet. It is stated that'three or four other ships are chartered to arrive shortly, but their names have not yet transpired. . The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Ruahino left port on Saturday evening for Wellington. She loaded a large quantity of frozen meat at this, port, and ■ completes her loading at Wellington, leaving .for. London on Thursday next. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD.
