THE TRAMWAYS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Mr Ell does not seem to bo aware that the compulsory purchasing power in The Tramways Act, ibo4, is expressly made “subject to the provisions of any existing Tease.” It is foolish to carp at the Company for seeking to get the terms of the new concession settled as soon as possible. Ido not think there is too much time left for the conduct of the negotiations and the hearing before the arbitrators. These new concessions must be arranged before the present term expires, or we may find ourselves compelled to endure a period without any trams being run. at all. Moreover, it is in the interests of the public that the terns should be fixed as soon as possible, so that the Company may be the sooner induced to make the improvements in their lines which the public so much desire. I hope, therefore, that while the local bodies will- endeavour to secure as good terms as they can get fop the public, they will see that the matter is settled as soon as possible.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.-
