THE VOLUNTEERS.
The usual recruit drill was carried on at the drillshed last night. 1 The Ambulance Corps, seventeen in number, were exercised in foot drill by. Staff Sergeant-Major Barrett. Tho Queen’s Cadets have changed their drill night from Wednesday to Thursday, and the first parade under the new arrangement will take place on Thursday next.. A Government parade of the Cycfe Corps .was held last night, when seventeen; rank and file under Lieutenant Finnis were present. The old Snider rifles were exchanged for the Martini-Henry. A Government parade of the City. Guards was held last night, when fifty-two rank and file were present under Captain Creswell. The tum-out was distinctly creditable. A competitive examination for non-com-missioned officers of the Canterbury Engineers will be held on Tuesday, May 9. The subjects for examination will be rifle and firing exercises ; duties of ' guides and markers ; guard mounting and relieving and posting of sentries ; knotting and lashing, shelter pits and trenches, squad drill; duties of commanders of sections, revetments ; military bridging, including the construction of trestle, single-lock, double-lock, and cask and raft bridges; field fortifications including a knowledge of obstacles, hasty entrenchments and defence of posts.
