ENTERTAINMENTS.
One of the most- pleasing entertainments afforded the public during the exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Arts was given last night by Madame Winter and her pupils. Mr Melchior Winter and the Misses Leah Hardie, Mabel Bleck, Bushell and C. Hardie contributed various items." A very successful concert was given in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lyttelton, on Wednesday night by some members of the crews of the ships Conway and Loch Torridon, assisted by a few friends. The' hall was crowded, - and the various items on the programme were most enthusiastically received. Messrs Broad, Walker, Williams, Turnbull, Thompson and Paul of the ships contributed items, while Mr Broad also gave two pianoforte selections. Misses Cowan, Hough and Galbraith assisted, and by special request Captain Hume sang.“ Ballyhooley” in capital style. Mrs Bromley accompanied the lady vocalists. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Seamen’s Rest, and a good cheque should be the result. There was a large attendance at the Caledonian, rooms on Thursday, when the inaugural “ social ” of the Lancashire Society was held. Mr B. Pilkington, vice-president, occupied the chair, and the evening commenced with a musical programme in which items were contributed by Miss Inns, and Messrs Perry, J. King, W. Godfrey, A. Rhodes, Small, Jones, and G. J. C. Smart. Messrs H. Croasdale, D. Ryan, and L. Armitage gave recitations, and readings were given by Messrs S. Bilcliff and Wilkinson. Graphophone and auto-harp selections were also given by Messrs D. H. Brown and Hamilton. The floor was afterwards cleared, and the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. During the evening the Right Hon R. J. Seddon paid a short visit, in which he expressed his sympathy with the Society, of which he had been elected patron, and said that it would be well if branches could be founded in each of the centres similar to this one.
