AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE.

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 5. A fire broke'out in the Door of Hope last night in a bedroom occupied, by a girl named Alma Hansen, from Wellington. The fire was suppressed, and the girl, who had disappeared from the Home, was found wandering in the streets, and was arrested on a charge of lunacy. Subsequently she was found in her cell in the lock-up grinding her teeth, as though in a fit, and she refused to answer questions. The police matron found in her mouth a quantity of pins, broken needles, tacks, and nails, and she told Sergeant Forbes that she had swallowed some of the pins. Dr.Sharman examined her, and ordered her removal to the hospital. She told the police that she had collected the pins and glass at the Doer of Hope, and carried them in her mouth for two days. The girl appeared quite rational when admitted, to the hospital. She was brought from Wellington by the Salvation Army, but left their institution. . She also left the Door of Hope, hut had been returned by the police to that institution.
