WORK AND WAGES.
A LABOUR COnAeSUCE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, May 5. A conference of Labour, delegates, representing New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, is being held here, with the object of drafting a scheme of federation acceptable and workable by all the provinces. WELLINGTON SEAMEN’S UNION, [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 5. The filing of papers yesterday by the Seamen’s Union was necessitated by the effluxion of the term of the award made by the Arbitration Court two years ago. Messrs Turnbull and 1 Co., representing the companies interested, have informed the Union that the shipowners concerned had. decided forthwith to reduce the wages of seamen, firemen, and greasers by 10s per month, which is a difference of £1 compared with the Union’s demands. It is understood that the owners intend to file papers asking for a reduction of wages so as to bring the rates in Wellington in line with those in Australia. The employers take strong objection to the clause that seawatches should count as a portion of eight hours’ work per day. Messrs Huddart, Parker, and Co. are not joined in the dispute, as no Wellington Union men are on their vessels.
