FLORAL FETE.
The floral fete for the benefit of th» funds for the improvement of the river Avon will be held at Lancaster Park today. The entries number over five hundred, as against one hundred and eightyfive at last year’s fete, and the'programme includes in addition to floral competitions of all kinds, a number of cycle events, including a musical ride, polo on bicycles, obstacle races and tortoise races. Every arrangement has been made for the convenience of the public, and the afternoon will be observed as a general holiday in town, nearly all the wholesale and retail houses, "as well as the Government offices, being closed from noon. Amongst the many exhibits will be some very fine displays, while in the novelty classes there are a number of unique exhibits. At the final meeting of the Executive Committee last evening it was decided to have all exhibits on the ground before noon, and that judging should commence as soon after that as possible. All wheeled exhibits will be admitted by the gate at the west end of the old pavilion, ticket-holders-’will pasts through the small gate close to the turnstiles, and the general public will gain admittance through the turnstiles. Bicycles must be taken iii through the gate close to the swimming bath, and arrau gements have been made for storing them. A procession of cyclists will leave Cathedral Square for Lancaster Park at 1 p.m,, headed by the Stanmore Band in a drag kindly lent by Mr J. O. Delamain. A meeting of the Ladies Committee o:I the Floral Fete was held yesterday afternoon at the Council Chambers. Mrs G. G. Stead presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The 'Mayor of Christchurch stated that a dressing-room would be provided for children who desired to arrange their costumes at the Park. As the programmes were not ready for distribution, it was decided that all the judges should meet in the committee room at Lancaster Park at twelve o’clock to-day. The badges were distributed to
