In the Supreme .Court to-day, Peter Grant, a bookmaker, was charged with contriving and intending to unlawfully pervert the due course of justice by attempting to dissuade one Albert Evans from giving evidence by offering him J3lO as a bribe not to give evidence in a case in which Grant was charged with keeping a gaming-house. The defence was that no money was offered, and that all Grant did and admitted was to endeavour to induce witnesses to stand by their legal right apd decline to give evidence which might incriminate them. The jury, after less than an hour’s retirement, returned a verdict of hot guilty, and Grant was discharged.
