CAVALRY CAMP. The men were early astir yesterday morning, and at the seven o’clock dismounted parade were practised at volley and independent firing with blank cartridge. A mounted, parade was. held in Hagley Park at ten o’clock, when Captains Lindsay and Snow and Adjutant Rnodes gave instruction in squadron movements, after which troop drill by tho officers of corps was gone through. Another mounted parade was. held at-Hagley Park in the afternoon, " 'when . the ..march-past was practised under the:, directions of . Captain- Coleman, and further troop evolutions were performed. Oh the return to, camp, jhnfping .practice was - indulged in', Chiefly 'by the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry men, whose horses, for the most part, jumped neatly 1 and steadily, one half-section-of the Mounted Rifles also putting in some very fair work. The only casualty which occurred fell; to the lot of a C.Y.C. trooper, whose horse pitched on his back after striking a hurdle. Beyond, however, a little temporary stiffness on the part of the trooper, not-..much harm, was done. One man was temporarily incapacitated for duty by an attack of influenza, the treatment of which was attended to by the regimental surgeon. The C.Y.C. will proceed to the Bromley Range at 7.30 this morning for the purpose of going through their volley and independent firing, and the Mounted Rifles will , do their’s in the afternoon. The Mounted Rifles in the morning, and the C.Y.C. in the afternoon, will be kept going, at troop drill. Lieu-, tenant Rhodes will be officer of the day, with Lieutenant Neave next for duty. The guard, consisting of a corporal and six troopers, will be supplied by the .C.Y.C.; sergeant of the guard, Sergeant Horrell, C.Y.C.; corporal of the guard. Corporal Dampier-Crossley, C.Y.C. The north-wester which was blowing hard all the afternoon chopped round shortly before 6 p.m. to a heavy, south-west gale, and a cold night was promised.

■ The committee of the military tournament, to be held at the Show Grounds on Saturday, in aid of the funds of the Garrison Band, wishes to. express its thanks ’ to the representatives of the rowing clubs for consenting to postpone the opening of the boating ’season till Oct. 15. The -programme provided for the tournament should attract a very large' attendance,, as it includes tent-pegging in sections, Lloyd-Lindsay competition, Turk’s head over hurdles, .half-sections over hurdles, Victoria Cross' pice, galloping- with guns, and', several amusing items. The afternoon’s sports will conclude with an attack

on a fort, which will be blown up by the engineers. The Garrison Band will play during the afternoon. The volunteers of Tlmaru opened the shooting season last week with a match "Non-coms” v. Privates. The latter won a match at 400, 600 and GOOyds by 540 points to 521. ; The Lyttelton Navals paraded on Monday night, when fifty-four of all ranks were present. Lieutenant r.Commander Joyce and Lieutenants Hewlett and Curtis were on parade. Sergeant major Burbury delivered a lecture on “ Powder,” which was both interesting and instructive.
