SOUTHLAND NEWS.
[Per Press Association.] INVEKCAEGILL, August 22. A youth was fined .£4 14s for firing a gun in a public place, and wilfully damaging the shelter shed at Tisbury station. He denied that he fired wilfully, alleging that the lock of the gun would not stand at half-cock, so he carried it at full-cock. The gun struck against the doorway, and one barrel was fired by the shock. Some boys deposed that they saw him put the rrnn to his shoulder. Major Keddell, the Magistrate, said that he did not believe defendant, and said that his method of carrying a gun proved him an idiot who should not be allowed at large with a loaded gun, with children about. Ho might think himself lucky that he was not thore on a charge of manslaughter.
