On Friday last, a couple of bales of wool on board the steamer Otarama were found to be somewhat heated, and the matter was brought under the notice of the captain by the superintending stevedore of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Captain Clifford deemed it wise to have the bales, and another ten which comprised the line, landed. They were taken to the company’s store and opened up, when it was found that the centres of the- bales were considerably heated. The wool was shipped at Timaru. The steamer Westralia arrived in port on Saturday from Sydney, via Auckland and way ports. Amongst her cargo was a quantity of citrus fruit, some of which was condemned, as it was affected by blight. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Otarama left port on Saturday for the Bluff, where she completes her loading for London. The steamer Penguin, from Wellington, had not put in an appearance at Lyttelton up to 6 p.m. yesterday. There was a strong south-east sea outside the Heads, and this probably detained her. The R.M.S.S. lonic is making good progress with her loading operations. She leaves on Thursday next for London. The steamer Brisbane proceeds from this port to Kaipara to load timber for Melbourne. The barque Activ comes to this port with - coal from Newcastle. A practical illustration of the methods adopted with regard to captured vessels is furnished in the case of the Panama. This steamer was captured by a United States cruiser on April 25 when within ten miles of Havana . while on her way to that port from New York, and condemned by a Prize Court sitting at Key West, Florida, on May 26. Her cargo was on , account of merchants of several The portion consigned to Mexicans was delivered to their order, the portion consigned to Spanish houses in Havana was sold as prize merchandise, the remaining portion was being retained by the Prize Court for further proof of neutral ownership when the mail left New • York. The principle has, therefore, been respected that neutrally-owned goods in an . enemy’s ship are to be delivered to their owners, ijjut all the expenses consequent on capture and release must -be borne by the neutral consignees. The Panama was sold by auction at New York on June 21, the successful bidders being

the^Quartermaster’s Department of the United States Army, and the price paid beng 41,000 dollars. Sk.e.was built in Glasgow in 1870. Her gross-tonnagV is 2085, and her net tonnage 1347; length, 355.4; -beam, 34.25; depth, 24.9; rig, barquentine. She was considered to be an “ old style ” steamer. H. M. .Bean, of Camden, United States, is at work buiiding what will be the largest schooner in the world. Her length of keel , will be 274 ft, length over all 324 ft, and she will have a carrying capacity of 4000 tons of«coal. She is being built for Captain J. G. Crowley, of Taunton, Massachusetts.
