The billiard match between Weiss and Roberts resulted in a win for the Australian by 371 points. The final scores in the billiard match were Weiss 20108, Roberts 19739. A MISSING BARQUE. The barque Glenfinlas, bound from Newcastle, Australia, to Manila, witb a cargo of coal, has been posted as missing. ELECTION. Mr Cornwallis, the Conservative candidate, has been elected for Maidstone by a majority o£ 168 votes. [At the general election, Mr T. G. Bowles, Conservative, was returned for Maidstone by a majority of 69 votes.] Received March 28, 8.3 U p.m. AN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. Mr Borchegrevink, who visited the Antarctic a few years ago, will sail in July in command of Sir George Newnes’ expedition to the South Pole.
POLITICS AT THE CAPE. CAPETOWN, March 27.
The Legislative Council elections have concluded. They give Mr Cecil Rhodes a majority of four votes. Received March 29,12.30 a.m. BRITISH AND GERMAN TRADE.
The British imports in 1897 increased in value by six millions, and the exports decreased by six millions. Germany’s imports during tbe same period increased by fourteen millions, while the exports increased by two millions.
