CYCLING.
PIONEER BICYCLE CLUB,
A general meeting of the Pioneer Bicycle Club was held at the club-rooms, Cathedral Square, yesterday evening. There was a large attendance of members, and Mr E. E. Daniels, captain of the club, presided. The following motions, propounded by the New Zealand Cyclists’ Alliance, were considered—“ That the clubs affiliated to the Alliance be asked to vote in favour of one of the three following questions: — r l. That the constitution and rules of the Alliance be altered in such manner as will permit members of affiliated clubs to race under a cash' definition or under an amateur definition, in distinct classes, and in distinct events.’ '2. That the Alliance be instructed to open up negotiations with the League of New Zealand Wheelmen with a view to amalgamation, on terms to be agreed upon.’ ‘3. That the Alliance continue in the government of ' amateur cycling solely, under its present constitution.’” The Chairman moved the adoption of the third proposition. Mr M. Brown, in seconding the resolution, said that the Pioneer Club had always stood by the cause of' amateurism. There was room enough for both branches of the sport, and amateurism would always hold its own. Mr P. Cooper was against amalgamation, and held that the Pioneer Club should continue as in the past. Mr A. Lowry thought the Alliance had acted rightly in propounding the questions they had met to consider. Personally he was indifferent whether or not the Club joined the League, but on the whole he considered they had better remain as they were for a few months. Mr Baldwin moved the adoption of Clause 2, on the broad ground of having one governing body for amateur cycling. The amendment was not seconded, Mr W. F. Waller moved the adoption of Clause 1, with the addition “ that the Pioneer Bicycle Club should do its best to induce the Alliance to give cash prizes.” The amendment did not find a seconder, but the Chairman seconded both amendments pro for mo. Clause 1 was then put and lost by 25 to 8, Clause 2 was also lost, and Clause 3, which was the original motion, was carried amid applause by 27 to 11. The delegates were instructed to vote in accordance with the resolution. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. The Pioneer Bicycle Club will hold its next club ride to-morrow, leaving Cathedral Square at 9 a.m. It is intended to take the train to Lyttelton, ride to Gebbie’s Valley and back, and return to Christchurch by train.
