The Canterbury Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting .began yesterday at .the Show Grounds, Addington. There was a fair attendance, and tbe track was in; good order. The sport was, on the whole, of a good class, and most of the events were well contested—a fact which may possibly have been due to the Stewards cautioning the driver of Dentist in tho Maiden Handicap for his leisurely progress. The chief saddle event, the Boxing Day Handicap, produced an exciting finish between Mallow and Stonewall Jackson,'the latter losing by being unable to respond to his little opponent’s- final - challenge. Candidate’s performance in the Eanfurly Stakes was of great, merit, particularly as he made up the whole of his handicap in the last half-mile. The struggle between Monte Carlo and Sam Slick lasted the whole of the second mile, each alternately having the advantage, and both were cheered at the close of the race. Stirling •Lad, who had refused to trot in the Boxing Day Handicap, won the Electric Handicap from -start to finish, without a skip; A protest against his receiving the latter stake was dismissed by the Stewards, but their decision has been appealed against to the Trotting Association. After the field for the Dash Handicap had gone some distance on their way it was discovered that the judge was not in his box, and the horses were recalled. One effect was to show several striking reversals of form, Topsy Irvington and The Baron, between whom the result of tho abortive race lay, being never dangerous in the second essay, which was won by Berlin Maid, who, with Scrutineer, who finished second, was previously hopelessly beaten. The sum of £4214 passed through the totalisators was £691 10s less than the amount dealt with

on the first day of . the Club’s last Summer meeting. The following are the results: — MAIDEN HANDICAP TROT (m harness), of 50 sovs; second 10 sovs, and third 4 sovs. Two miles. 28 Mr T.
