TOWN AND COUNTRY.

Parliamentary. The Legislative Council yesterday passed the Mining 1 Companies Act Amendment Bill through, the final stages. The other business transacted was of an unimportant nature, and on its rising the Council adjourned till Wednesday next. In the House of Representatives the whole of the afternoon sitting was devoted to the consideration of local Bills. At the evening sitting the Wages Protection Act Amendment Bill and the Land and Income Assessment Acts Amendment Bill were read a second time and referred to committees;' The Sunday Labour in Mines Prevention Bill and the Explosives Act Amendment Bill passed their final stages. A motion for the appointment of a committee was oppossd by the Opposition, and after a long discussion the debate was adjourned.

“New Zealand Cyclist.” —The New Zealand Cyclist published to-day consists or fifty-two pages, including a twenty-page supplement, which deals specially with the New Zealand Metropolitan Cycle Show. The first exhibition of cycles in: New Zealand is fully reported and profusely illustrated. Included in the issue is * specially written article dealing with the early history of cycling in New Zealand, Photographs of the first cycle manufactured in the colony and of the, first cyclist are reproduced, and interesting accounts of the velocipede races of the early days, together with particulars of early riders are given. The Belay Bide is reported in full, particulars of the various stages all along the route being given, as well as tables showing minutely the progress of this unique performance. In addition to these special features the ordinary columns are well up to their usual standard, containing an abundance e£ interesting information, useful to all classes of cyclists, and accompanied by the admirable illustrations that are a feature of the journal. This enlarged number certainly constitutes a record in cycling journalism, and instances the thoroughness with which the proprietors are catering for the wants of wheelmen and wheelwomen.

Postal. The Postal Department announces that the letter-carriers will not make a second delivery on Show-day, but that letters may be obtained on application, between 2.30 and 5 p.m., at the Chief Post Office counter.

Eangioba Mayoralty. —ln deference to the unanimous wish of the Eangiora Borough Council, expressed by resolution at a meeting held last night, the Mayor (Mr C. I. Jennings) reconsidered his decision not to stand for a second .term of office, and consented to become a candidate. He was at once nominated. . . Cycling Annual.— The “Hew Cycling Annual,” published in oonneotioa with the Metropolitan Cycle Show, is a very useful work for cyclists, and should have a large circulation. It contains several interesting articles, two road maps and a large amount of other useful matter. The price of the boob is sixpence. It is on feale at the Cycle Show and the various bicycle establishments.

Pedigree Sheep. —Mr F. C. Tabarfc yesterday submitted to auction, at his wool stores, thepedigree Shropshire rams sent over from Tasmania. There was a fair attendance, and considerable interest was manifested in the sale. Mr E. S. Steele’s two fourteen-months-old rams were purchased by Mr C. Todhunter, of Westerfield, and Messrs J. D. and A. MTlraiah, of Eakaia, respectively at seventeen guineas each. Mr T. J. Burhury’a fourteen-months-old ram was purchased by Mr B. Aikman, of Camara, at twenty guineas, and his thirteen-months-old ram by Mr A. Amyes, of Fllesmere, at twelve guineas.

West Chbistchubch School Committee. —The monthly meeting, was held on Wednesday; present—Messrs W. M’Clea (chairman), W. Smith, G. T. Chisnall, G. Watson, W. J. Watson and C. D. Morris. The head-master forwarded a

letter from Mr Ambrose tendering his resignation of the position of first: assistant master, and recommended the promotion of Messrs F. J. Eowley, 8.A., P. Menzies, 8.A., W. Kain and J. Irwin, and to ask the Board to advertise for a junior assistant' master. It was decided, to accept Mr Ambrose’s resignation with regret, to congratulate him upon his promotion- in the profession, and to recommend the Board to fill the vacancy as suggested. The tender of Mr C. Goodwin was accepted for asphalt work at the school, and Messrs G. Watson and J. Parks were appointed to superintend its execution.
