THE RICHMOND LOAN.
It should be scarcely necessary to remind the ratepayers of Richmond of the opportunity they will have today to assist in the improvement of their part of the city. A poll will be taketi at the Foresters’ Hall in Vogel Street, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., to determine whether or not a special loan shall be raised for the purpose of channelling and regrading a number of streets in the ward. There can be little doubt about the result of the poll, as a large majority of the ratepayers have shown themselves thoroughly alive to the importance of the undertaking, but it 13 just as well that every available vote should he recorded. People are too apt in cases of this sort to think that their assistance is not required, and to leave the formality of Voting to their neighbours. If everyone proceeded on this principle it would, of course, be impossible to make any progress at all. Municipal affairs would bo allowed to drift until they reached a point at which the public might have to pay pretty dearly for their apathy. But the ratepayers of Richmond are hardly likely to offend to that extent. They have been reminded more than once in a rather painful way of: the insanitary condition of certain portions of their ward, and it would bo liitie short of criminal on their part to neglect the present opportunity to
complete their system of drainage. We hope to see this evening an overwhelming majority in favour of the loan.
