DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS: [Per Press Association.]
LONDON, July 28. In the House of Commons, Colonel Hill, the member for Bristol and the President of the Chamber of Shipping, complained that the New Zealand Seamen’s Act compelled British shipowners to pay local wages, m despite of the conditions of contract* that they had entered into, Mr Chamberlain, in reply, suggested the’New Zealand Goyernmentshohti limit the operation of the law lip coasting vessels. He said that ha presumed that the colonies were aware that uniform shipping legislation wat desirable throughout the "Empire. Jtn.Y 29. '
The Hon W. P. Reeves, in a letter to the Times , explains that the Shipping Act mentioned in the House «£ Commons is limited in operation ~to New Zealand vessels and df-dOMt traders.
