CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Cheviot County Council met at M’Kenzie on Saturday, at 11 a.m.; present—Messrs G. M’Eae (chairman), D. M’Laren, A. W. Rutherford, P. T. Gell and S. Haughey. The meeting was convened to discuss the financial affairs of the county. The harbour-master furnished a detailed statement of receipts and expenditure of the Port Robinson landing service from-April .1, 189(5, to May 31, 1897, which gave a net profit of .£lll 16s lOd. The Clerk was instructed to ask the Lands and Survey Department to furnish the Council with a detailed account, and to ask the Department to explain how it arrived at the conclusion that there is a debit balance for that period of £57 9s 4d. It was- -resolved, on the motion of' Mr Rutherford, seconded by , Mr.' Haughey,' that public notice should be given that unless all rates were paid on or before August 15 legal ■proceedings Would bo taken for their recovery. It was resolved that the next meeting of the Council should be held on August 31, at 11 a.m. Councillor M’Laren gave notice that at that meeting he would move, " That a separate rate should be struck of a halfpenny in the £ for the period commencing Oct. 1,1897, and ending on March 31,1898, to be due and payable on Oct 1,1897.” It was resolved to inform the Ranger that a complaint had been received by the Council that a number of cattle were wandering on some of the roads, and that he must look after them. The Clerk was directed to inform Mr J. Bruce that the Council declined to do anything in connection with the Crystal Brook.
