The following notice with - regard to telephone bureaus is gazetted Where a lino used is not more than six miles long a uniform charge of 6d for the use of the same for any period not exceeding three minutes, and a further charge of 6d for every additional three minutes or portion of three minutes. Where the line used is over six miles long the charges are Is for the use of the same for any time not exceeding three minutes, and a further charge of Is for every additional three minutes or portion of three minutes. The regulation as to time (three minutes) shall only apply to bureau stations within the limits of a town where an exchange is situated. For bureau stations outside the limits of a town, the charge will be for the first six minutes and every additional six minutes or fraction of six minutes. When subscribers are connected through the exchange to a bureau station, or from a bureau station to a subscriber, half the above rates will he charged. When a message to the effect' that any person is required at a telephone is delivered by the department from a bureau station 3d will be charged for delivery within the ordinary circuits of delivery. These charges must be paid by the sender. Messagss ’outside the limits described above are subject to special charges for delivery according to the extra 1 expense thereby incurred. The Gazette announces that the capitation'allowance to Education Boards fpr the quarter ending Sept. 30, 1897; shall be according to the working average attenddanco of the quarter ending on June 30, 1897, as the working average was defined by Order in Council dated July 5, 1887. Mr J. M. Batham is gazetted judge of the Native Appellate Court. Mr E. J. D. Robertson has been appointed inspector and grader under the Dairy Industry Act. The Rev J. Hobbs, of Hastings, has been appointed honorary chaplain of the Hastings Rifles.
Lieutenant T. B. Muir, of the Wellington City Rifles, has resigned. ‘ The services of No. 2 Company, Ohinemuri Rifle Volunteers, have been accepted. New Zealand war medals have' been issued to Bugler Samuel Knight, New Zealand (Taranaki) Militia; Private David Jordan, No. 2 Company Taranaki Rifle Volunteers; Private Levi Sarten, No.' 1 Company, Taranaki Rifle Volunteers. Mr Patrick Ryan, of Heddon’s Bush, Southland, has resigned from the Commission of the Peace.
The following colonies have removed the prohibition of importation of swine from New Zealand: —Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, West Australia and Tasmania.
