There being no other explanation forthcoming for his withdrawal, the Age says that Mr Cooper’s idea in scratching.NcWhaven for the Sydney Cup was,[no doubt, that ho considered the, horse too valuable to risk an accident in a big field, and it may be regarded as a significant indication that Mr Cooper has high hopes of Newhaven earning distinction in England. The paper adds that Mr Cooper is apparently very sensitive about the champion being beaten, and it may bo that his defeat in the St Leger Stakes had something to do with his withdrawal from the Cup.

' A fog hanging over the course this morning made it for a time a difficult matter to ascertain the correct distances covered by the various horses. .Cutts was first, to commence, and despatched Manawanui and Weary, followed presently by Choroid, over six furlongs at three-quarter pace. Goldloaf defeated Seashell over five furlongs, and Salvo Shot was a good deal better than Eustic over six furlongs, while Bloomer was too good for Bold over five furlongs. . Admiralty and Chaos jumped off at the/mile and a quarter po.t, and galloped to the top of the straight. Here the former was pulled off, ■ and Chaos finished alone in good style. Jewel easily beat Jib over six furlongs. Miniature, who is improving,,spurted four furlongs by herself." Dumlop was better than Miss Charm lira gallop over seven furlongs, and Wedlock galloped a mile by himself. Belligerent and Skirmisher were associated, in a gallop over seven furlongs on the grass. The former finished a trifle in front of his companion, but very probably the positions might have been reversed had the rider of Skirmisher pleased. Shooting Star tired considerably at the end of a gallop oyer five furlongs, while Mauser and Sprig of Myrtle did half-pace xvork. -
