At the Transvaal Raid Committee, Sir John Willoughby gave evidence to the effect that he had told the officers participating in the raid that neither the War Office, the Imperial Government, nor the Chartered Company would bother if the undertaking wore successful. At the sitting of the Transvaal Raid Committee, Sir John Willoughby declined to state the substance of private letters to the War Office. Mr Labouchere therepon described the Committee as a farce, and declared that it was hushing up everything. The claim made by the Transvaal in connection with the Jameson raid includes £462,120 as compensation lo burghers who were “ to resist the raid. This is exclusive of £136,733 for common losses, and £1,000,000 for moral-damage to the Republic.
