AUCKLAND NEWS.
[Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. At half-past twelve the visiting athletes were welcomed by the local amateur association. The President extended a hearty welcome, and expressed regret that many southern champions were unable to be present, but recognised that among the visitors were competitors who would give the local representatives a hard nut to crack in the endeavour to recover the champion banner which was wrested from them by Canterbury last year 1 . The committee, he said, would devote itself to giving the visitors an enjoyable time both on water and land. Mr King, Wellington (in the absence of Mr Grierson, Christchurch), Mr Ferguson, Wanganui, and Mr Hamilton, Hawke’s Bay, briefly responded. Mr Seymour George, vice-president, also welcomed the visitors, and cheers were exchanged. The visitors were taken round the stud farms this afternoon, and tomorrow will make an excursion across the harbour, and be driven around Takapuna.
