[Per Press Association.!

BRISBANE, Dec. 28.

A fire at Barcaldine destroyed the Town Hall and a number of business premises and private houses. The damage was very large.

At 1.30 a.m. on Christmas morning an unoccupied two-roomed cottage in St Albans Lane, the property of the Union Bank of Australia, was destroyed by fire. Some boys were seen playing about the place, and are supposed to be responsible for the fire.

At 5 o’clock on Boxing Day morning a six-roomed house next to the Bower Hotel, on the New Brighton Road, was destroyed by fire. The house was occupied by Mr J. M’Lachlan, a farmer. The origin of the outbreak is not known.

At 11.45 last evening an alarm was given at both Fire Brigade Stations! The brigade turned out smartly, with all its plant, only to find that a false alarm had been given from the box at the corner of Victoria and Durham Streets.
