Mr Chamberlain has declined to interfere with the duty levied by the Maltese Government on frozen meat. The regulations for stamping and inspecting meat aboard vessels are likely to be altered.

The weekly returns of the Bank of England published to-day show the total reserve to be £35,892,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities 58'64. Three months’ bills are discounted at 1 per cent. Consols 112 f.
New South Wales 4 per cent stock, 122; 3$ do, 1091; Victorian 4 per cents 114$; 3 A do, 107; South Australian 4 per cents 116; 31 do, 112; Queensland 4 per cents, 116; 31 do, 1091; Tasmanian 3$ per cents, 11 If; West Australian 31 per cents, 112; New Zealand 4 percents, 117$; 31 do, 109 J; 3 do, 103$. New Zealand frozen mutton, first quality 3 Id; second 2|d. Lamb, 4-J-d. The English wheat market shows • a general advance "of 6d. There is also a general advance in the Continental, while the American has an upward tendency. ■ Tallow—Mutton, fine quality 19s 9d, medium 18s 6d ; beef, fine quality 17s 9d, medium 17s.
Sugar—German beet 9s 6d, Java 11s 9d. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 46s 3d.
