SAVAGE CLUB.

One of the most successful and enjoyable koreros of the Savage Club was held in the Art Gallery last evening, when the «• chiefs” and “ braves ” entertained their lady friends. The hall had been tastefully decorated by Savages M. Lawin, J. M. Madden and Menzies Gibb, Native mats, ornaments, weapons and curios being disposed around the room, whilst the walls were embellished with art muslins and pictures. The proceedings commenced. with the opening ode, after which Medicine-Man Jennings was installed as Chief Tohunga and head of the hapu. He gave an interesting address, explaining why the famous London club had taken the name of “ Savageand also gave a vivid account of the Battle of laandlwana. Later in the evening Savage J. W. Stack gave an interesting address on “Maori Dress and Weapons.” The vocalists were Savage A. Miliar, who sang “ Kings of the Road,” and Savage Woodhouse, who contributed “Alice, Where Art Thou?” being accompanied by the Batudiantina Band, which Iso played some selections. Savage Willis, with the assistance of a chorus of “ braves,” gave some excellent sea chanty songs, and Savage C. Biiaz played with considerable skill Sarasate’a intricate violin solo, “Zigeuner Weiaen.” Savage Eoper recited “The Bells,” the effect of which was considerably heightened by the introduction of a miniature peal of bells. Savage N. Smith told a Maori love story, and Savage G. P. Williams recited one of his own compositions entitled “ Atra Cura.” An amusing vsntriloquial sketch was given by Savage Bay ward, and during the evening Savages J. M. Madden and Menzies Gibb painted two excellent pictures in oils. These pictures will be sold by auction at the next Jcorero and the proceeds handed to the Winter Work Fund. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close by singing an “ Ode to the Squaws.” Savage A. Merton acted as accompanist, and the were in the hands of Mr Buggey.
