WINTER WORK FUND.

The demands upon the Winter Work Fund are still growing. It is feared that the committee will have to discharge a number of the men who are now employed in order to make room for others who have not yet had an opportunity to participate in the benefits of the public subscription. No one contends for a minute that the men. who have been earning 16s or 18s a week should now be in a position to support themselves from their savings. They have had difficulty enough to keep themselves and their dependents in food and firing from day to day, and if they should lose their present employment they will he driven to apply for charitable aid. Their only hope is that the hundreds of people in the city and suburbs [who have not yet subscribed to the Fund will save them from this painful necessity. We trust this hope will be justified by a liberal response during the next few days to the Mayor’s appeal for additional assistance.
