WORK AND WAGES.

The American trades have summoned a national conference for the purpose of organising military regiments, exclusive of Unionists, to guard employers’ property during strikes and prevent disorder. [Peb Pbess Association.] DUNEDIN, June 10. The Otago Typographical Association has resolved that owing to the large number of unemployed compositors throughout the colony, the Government and private employers should be urged to abolish the system of overtime. The Dunedin Assembly of the Knights of Labour, claiming to be the only lawfully constituted Assembly in Dunedin, held an emergency meeting to-night and passed a resolution placing on record their deep and heartfelt sympathy for those out of work, tendering grateful acknowledgments to the citizens who had so generously and magnanimously came forward with private means to help to alleviate the distress, and in order to give practical effect to their feeling voted £S as a first instalment to the relief fund. The Mayor of Lin wood, who desires to know the number of men in want of employment in his district, would be glad if all such would register their names at the local Borough Council Chambers immediately. At the meeting of the Avon Road Board yesterday the sum of JBIOO was voted to find work for the unemployed, provided that the amount is subsidised by another JBIOO from the Government. A meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Workers’ Union was held at the head office, Waimate on Saturday night; Mr Thomas Brown (President) in the chair. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows From the Clarion Club, Wellington, asking that a branch of the Union should be established in Wellington, as they wished to see the wharf bands and other unskilled labourers under a proper organisation. It was resolved to move in the matter immediately on the opening of Parliament. From Christchurch, Timaru, Winton, Gore and Oamaru, asking for information regarding registration under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. From Geraldine, reporting progress and stating that a deputation had waited on the local Road Board, and that it was probable that .£3OO would be spent by that body on road work for the relief of unemployed. From Hastings, recommending that a branch of the Union should be opened at Patea. The Secretary was instructed to move in the matter. The Secretary was instructed to apply to the Hon Major Steward, asking him to use hia best endeavours to find work for the local unemployed. Mr George Pearce reported on the case of a local farmer who had refused to pay wages owing to a member of the Union. The matter had been placed in a solicitor’s hands, and a satisfactory arrangement had been made. The meeting then terminated.
