GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

There is no appreciable alteration to notice in connection with the grain market. The most salient feature is the fact that wheat is very strongly held. Clover seed continues to bo offered in quantity, and purchases by dealers up to date are considerable. Whbat has nob been offered freely, holders apparently having faith in the future. Speculative enquires for parcels in merchant’s hands have transpired, bub prices demanded somewhat check business. Pearl 2b Bd, to 2* BJd, Tuscan 2a 7d to 2b Hunter’s 2a 6d to 2s 7d. Fowl wheat is scarce, and brings prices well up to milling. . Oats.— Transactions in oats in uhe south have been frequent, and shipments from that quarter are considerable. This fact will, doubtless, help values here later oa. Outside of this consideration the market locally is steadier, and prices, if anything, have hardened. Prime milling are quoted at Is 4£l, and a shade more for an exceptional sample; Duds Is 2-J-d-to Is 4d; Tartars and black la 3jd to la 4d; stout feed la Ssd to Is 4d. Barley is without inquiry and quotations are only nominal; malting 2s 6d to 2s 91, seconds 2s 3d to 2b 6d. feed la 6d to la 9 i. Cape barley Is 61 to Is 9d. Beans and Peas.— Samples of beans have been more plentiful but prices have not improved. Is lid to 2a representing values. There is little doing in peas; Pruesian Blues 2a to 2s 2d, Partridge 2s Id to 2s 21, feed lines Is 101 to 2s. Btkcobn in in little demand at Is 6d. Flour.—Millers now quote roller £7 10a, atone .£7, sharps .£3 15s, bran .£2 10a. Oatmeal .£8 to £8 a*. Considerable quantities! of southern production are being sold locally. Potatoes. —Digging and pitting are now the order of the day. Outside prospects do not afford much hope of an improvement; 15s to 17s 6d are quoted at country stations. Grass Seed. —In ryogrars there is no business. Cocksfoot is equally dull, and busine-s for the next two months will ba sluggish. A few lines of farmers’dressed cocksfoot have been sold for the south out of merchants’ stocks. Cowgrass. —Considerable quantities of cowgraas and red clover have been taken by merchants lately. A number of tho lines offered have been a shade dull in colour. Values are easier for prime seed, good realising ssd and inferior 51. Onions are quoted at 85s to 955, sacks included. Dairy Produce. —Butter, factory Sd to 9d; dairy, 6d to 81; cheese, SJ J to4d; small loaf,4£d.

The above are prices paid to farmers f.o.b. Lyttelton, unless where otherwise stated.
