FRENCH POLITICS.
AN IMPORTANT SPEECH. [Special to Frees Association.! PARIS, Mat 12. M. Eibot, speaking at the opening of the Bordeaux Exhibition, said the recent joint action in tho far East would further knit together Russia and France, whose alliance would be an additional guarantee of peace to the world. Ho indicated the necessity for further taxation, including a graduated tax on domestic servants. Mat 13. M. Eibot derides the agitation among the priesthood against taxation as fictitious, and asserts that it will soon be abandoned. Speaking at a banquet at Bordeaux, hesdaimed that the Democracy had proved capable of a ’ uniform, tenacious foreign policy. The world had realised that an enduring alliance with Russia was a guarantee of peace. After tho campaign in Madagascar was over it was intended to make tho island a real colony, and they would offer their young men a chance to convert it into a new Prance. LONDON. May IS. The , Chronicle's Roma correspondent says that the Pope has retreated from his first position, and is now advising the French clergy to submit to taxation.
