DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.
We are surprised to learn that several people who have read the letter from Mr G. W. Russell referring to the recent death under chloroform, which appeared in yesterday’s issue, have concluded that the writer wished to cast some aspersion upon the medical gentlemen who were engaged in the fatal operation. We are sure that nothing was further from Mr Russell’s intention. Dr Nedwill, who performed the operation, had nothing whatever to do with the administration of the anaesthetic, and Dr Murray-Aynslej, we are assured by independent" witnesses, took every precaution to secure the safety of his patient. But this does not affect the contention that an inquest should be held. The public have a right to full information concerning accidents of this sort, and Mr Beetham made a very grave mistake in deciding to dispense with the usual formal inquiry.
