ROAD BOARDS.
AVON. The monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday ; present Messrs C. Burgess, W. Dunlop, W. Horner, W. Nicholls and G. M’latyre. Mr C. Burgess gave notice of his wish to retire from tho chairmanship of the Board, having held the position for three years in succession. Mr W. Dunlop was elected chair mas for the year. Special orders were received from the Waimnkariri River Board and Christchurch Drainage Board, levying rates of three sixty-fourths of a penny and three farthings in tho pound. The City Surveyor and Town Clerk wrote drawing attention to quicksands in the drain on North Avon Road. The Clerk was instructed to meet the city authorities and arrange as to what was beat to he done. Tho Gas Company wrote, declining to reduce the price for lighting the Papanui lamps. The Commissioner of Crown Lands gave notice that B.S. 35647 would bo vested in tho Board. Three letters were read from Mr D. Stranaghan relative to James Street, New Brighton. The matter was ordered to bo attended to. Tho Clerk was granted fourteen days’ sick lßave,and it was unanimously resolved that tha salary of the Clerk and Surveyor should be increased to £IBO per annum as from April 1, 1895, It waa resolved that in future casual hands should be paid 5s per day. Mr M’lutyre moved—*' That a very hearty vote of thanks be recorded on tho shinutea to Mr Charles Burgess for the great services ho has rendered tho Board as its chairman during tha last three years.” . This waa seconded by Mr Dunlop, and carried unanimously. Tho meeting then ieesolved itself into a Board of Health, and shortly afterwards terminated.
