POLO.

THE SAVILE CUP TOURNAMENT. The Savilo Cup Tournament was concluded yesterday, under anything but favourable circumstances. Just before fens commencement of proceedings rain began, and it continued to fall until after the final round of the contest had been finished. By that time the ground had become a porfect quagmire, and it was deemed unadvisablo to play tho game which had been arranged between l Auckland and Warrengats, As was anticipated* the Manawatu defeated the Eangitikoi No. 2 team very easily, aad after the conclusion of the game Mrs George Buckley, wife ot one of the vice-presidents of the Now Zealand Polo Association, - presented tho cup to Mr A# S. Baker, captain of tho winning team. Mr Baker made a short ! speech in which ho deplored tho fact that various members of the losing teams had been injured, and then three cheers were given for the winners and for Captain Savilo, the donor of the cup. Under the circumstances tho attendance was satisfactory, but -the ground was, of coarse, very heavy and the play consequently of a somewhat uninteresting character. Manawatu v. Rangitikei No. 2. Manawatu—No. 1, A. Williams; No. 2, A. S. Baker (captain) ; No. 3,F. P. Snow; No. 4, W. B. Lloyd. Rangitikei No. 2—No. 1, G. A. Wilson ; No. 2, B. Eoiller; No. 3, K. Dalrymple; No. 4, W. A. Keiller (captain). Not more than a coupfo of minutes after the game had commenced Baker scored for Manawatu, and directly ends were changed the Manawatu captain again hit the ball between the posts. Then Rangitikei warmed up a trifle, aad for a few minutes kept its opponents on the defensive. Towards the close of the opell, however, the Manawatu men again had matters their own way, and Lloyd and Snow both scored. No sooner bad the second spell been started than Snow increased the Manawatu total by one goal, and although the Rangitikei men worked hard, and were playing a really fine losing game, they never made any serious headway against their formidable opponents. Lloyd and Snow changed places for a short time, but they quickly resumed their old positions when Rangitikei momentarily became aggressive, and then Snow and Baker each scored in quick succession. At the commencement of the third spell Rangitikei missed an excellent opportunity of scoring, but immediately afterwards E. made some amends by registering Kangitikei’s one and only goal. This was, however, an expiring effort, and although tho Rangitikei men played the game out to tho bitter end in a manner which excited the admiration and sympany of the spectators, they were clearly no match for their opponents, who scored three more goals—two by the agency of Lloyd and one by that of Baker, and the game ended in a victory for Manawatu by 10 goals to 1. The following will show the results of the various games throughout tho tournament first round. Christchurch No. 1. (6) beat Auckland (2). Rangitikei No. 1 (5) beat Warreagate (1). Rangitikei No. 2 (5) boat North Canter-, bury (4). Ashburton (10) beat Christchurch No. 2 (3)Manawatu a bye. SECOND BOUND, Manawatu (3) beat Christchurch No. 1 (2).
