FIRES.

[Special to Press Association.} SYDNEY, March 8. Waverley’s Hotel was gutted by firs early this morning. Only the walla remain standing. A number of inmates had narrow escapes ; several men in their, night clothes were rescued from the roof by means of a ladder, and at great risk the firemen got out the women Bleeping in the higher storeys. Some -ware in an unconscious state. [Per Press Association.} HA WEE A, Marchs 8. Henry’s timber works at Hawera were,destroyed by fire early this morning. They contained .£3OO worth of machinery and a large stock of windows, doors, gates, &o. Nothing was eared. There is no insurance, and the loss is a heavy one. WELLINGTON, March B.' At eleven o'clock to-night the large stables at Newton, lately in the occupation of the Wellington Bus Company (which has been running in opposition to the tramway) were discovered on fire, and were burnt to the ground. Mr A. Crossey, the late manager of the company, had only just taken over the plant, buildings, &0., and was running the affair; therefore bin loss will be considerable. It was fortunate that most of the plant was plying for hire on the streets at the time of the outbreak. However, the loss on buildings, fodder,, harness, &0., will amount to several hundreds. All the horses were saved. The insurances were not available this ingSBy a fire which broke out betweenthrea and four o’clock yesterday morning, a dwelling-house and shop, at Southbridge, occupied by Mr T. Gamble and his wife, were burnt to the ground. The building and furniture were insured in the London and Lancashire Office for £SOO, and the stock in the Liverpool and London and Globe £7OO. The origin of the fire is •unknown. After the alarm had been given the brigade was soon on the spot, and the adjoining houses ware emptied of furniture. The shop occupied by Mr F. Paddy, saddler, and the library, were at times in great danger, as there was a strong northeast wind blowing, but the brigade by its efforts quickly bad the flames extinguished. Very little of Mr -Gamble’s furniture wau saved, and the stock was completely burned.
