THE SNIDER RIFLES.

TO THE BDITOK. Sib, —As it has been announced that the Government have 2000 Sniders for sale, it may bo well to consider whether the price we are likely to obtain for the obsolescent arm of precision will warrant oar scattering, beyond recall, enough weapons to supply two battalions. In the event of war, we may find the warning too short to admit of any material increase in the number of Martini-Henry rifles ; and, provided Snider cartridges can be kept in stock, the- possession of 2000 Sniders in good order would enable uo to arm a-com-pact body of men—perhaps loyal Maoris—for special service, not necesiarily in Hew Zealand. The proposed eala may not benefit us to any great extent, while the retention of the weapons in cur hands will at least prevent their use in the South Seas.—l am, &c., J. H. HEWLYH.
