EDUCATION BOARD.

NORTH CANTERBURY. An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday ; present - Maaara Meredith (chairman), Rennie, Saunders, Peryman and the Hon W. Montgomery. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Westenra, Adams and Munnings. ELECTION OP MEMBERS. The result of the election for throe members of the Board was reported aafollows : Mr E. Westenra 93, Mr J. W. Sawle 60, Mr A. Saunders 55, Mr W. J. Cresswell 46, Mr J. Joyce 38, Mr S. K. Webb 33, Mr P. C. Hall 22, Dr B. M. Moorhouse 21, Mr J. M. Douglass 17, Mr J. Richardson 15. Messrs Westenra, Sawle and Saunders were declared duly elected. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments Waiau, Mr P. H. Bowler, master; Christchurch East, Mrs Wagataff, first assistant mistress; Wooloton, Miss M. Pratt, assistant; as pupil teachers: Sydenham, Maude Lancaster, Mary Simpson, Craig Peppier, George Maginnes; Opawa, Charles Henry Foster; Leeston, Alice Parkin; Addington, Miss B. Dynes, assistant mistress; Glenroy, Mrs Sloane, sewing mistress. The committee had agreed to appoint the two pupil teachers recommended by the Lyttelton School Committee on the receipt of the necessary certificates, but the employment of an assistant mistress in addition could not be sanctioned. It was resolved to allow an assistant mistress at West Lyttelton. A month’s leave of absence had been granted to Miss Howes, of the Elgin school. The resignations of Miss E, Henderson and Mrs Ryan, mistresses at Springston and Kowai Pass respectively, had been accepted. The report was adopted. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee reported that in the buildings account the expenditure had already exceeded the money available by JSIS2. The Clerk of Works had been directed to visit the school at Sumner and report on the buildings there. The question of erecting a master’s house at Eolleston had been held over. A new tank had been allowed for the master’s house at Kaiapoi. Repairs to the chimney and a new range had been authorised at Carleton. Other matters had been postponed till future meetings. The report was adopted. NOBMAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Normal School Committee reported that Professor Bicbertoa had agreed to the arrangement proposed for teaching science to the students in the Normal school, viz., that he should confine himself to the experimental work and leave the preliminary instruction, which can be given without apparatus, to Mr Watkins. This would effect a further saving of about J 835, and would bring the total reduction in the expenditure on the Normal school to X2OO. The arrangement had been approved. Mr Watkins had been authorised to begin his part of the work at once in anticipation of the College terms. The report was adopted. SCHOOL EXCURSIONS. A letter was received from the Railway Department stating that the Government was willing to grant free passages to ten children of poor people to every ninety carried on school excursions. The secretary was instructed to ascertain what the actual amount of the concession would be. This concluded the business.
