DAIRY NOTES.

(Canterbu’rit ’limes.) Tho shipments by the National Dairy Association of New Zealand from tho beginning of the season (Oct. 24) to Fob. 15 amounted to 5443 boxes of butler, weighing 257 tone 4owt, and 19,776 cases of cheese, weighing 1367 tons 4cwfc, Mr J. R. Scott, secretary of tha Association, has just returned from the North Island, where ho found the operations of tho Association were highly appreciated. Mr M’Ewac, the Canadian dairy expert, has for the present finished his labours in the South Island, and wont to Wellington last Saturday. Hia instructions were well received throughout his tour, and cannot fail to act beneficially upon the manufacture of butter and cheeae, particularly as regards uniformity of quolity. Indeed, it is declared that following bia advice has increased the value o? the cheese turned out by some previously good makers in Otago by several shillings per cwt. Tho hope is expressed that tho Government will either induce Mr M’Ewan—who is here by permission, of tho Canadian Government —to arrange to remain here permanently, or engage another expert possessed of similar qualifications. Mr Hugh Hewitt, representative of the Biooksido Patent Milker syndicate, left for Sydney last weak, to introduce the machine ia Australia. Several installations have been fitted up on large Otago daky farms thia season, and their success has led to pressing invitations to place the invention at tho service of the Australians.

Over twelve million pounds of butter,, valued at .£300.000, have been exported from Victoria since the eoaaon began, at the end of July. An order has been received in .Melbourne from Samoa for » trial shipment of butter. It is believed that there are excellent prospects for establishing a large trade there in butter, cheese, hams, bacon, onions and potatoes if freight charges are not. too high. With a view to stimulating the export of first - class butter to England the Canadian Government has arranged to advance dairymen twenty cents per lb. The London salesman . state that Canadian butter will arrive chiefly ia July and August, and will not seriously compete with the colonial article.

Messrs Weadel and Co. assort that the decreasing exports of the Dominion prove that Canada is unable to compete with Australian butter.
