[CORRESPONDENT “ CANTERBURY TIMES.”] March 4. HOSPITAL STAFF. At a meeting o? the trustees of tho Grey Eiver Hospital, held on Wednesday evening last, the report of tho committee with, regard to tho proposed • alterations in tho staff appointments was diacuaaed and considered at length. The report contained proposals by the committee which, if acted upon, would, result in an annual jawing of £230 in salaries. Tho proposals were to tho effect that the annual salary list for the institution should be:—Doctor £3OO, matron £7O ; three trained and eshtifieated narees, £SO each; two probationers, £lO each; female cook, £6O; laundress; £6O; porter, £73 ; gardener, £SO; total, £785, Ultimately the report was adopted and the Secretary instructed to advertise for applications from certificated nurses for - the vacant positions. The committee was also requested to wait in a body upon tho Premier nud point out the saving proposed to be effected, and alao advocate the necessity for a new hospital, old men’s home, and nurses' residence. THE PREMIER. As the Hon Mr Seddon and his family will be leaving the Coast in a few days to take up their residence iu Wellington, the citizens have been bestirring themselves to keep pace with the people of the neighbouring towns. It was felt that some official recognition should bo made of tho many services rendered to Groymouth by tho Premier, and, having this in view, his Worship the Mayor, at the lash meeting of the Town Council, brought tho question up, and the proposal to give a fitting farewell to so capable and worthy a reurGoOatativa of tho Coast as tho Ron Mr Seadon was agreed to unanimously. It was decided to invito tho co-operation of tho Grey County Council and tho Harbour Board. At a meeting held subsequently a, conirdittea was appointed to canvass tho town for subscriptions, and tho county councillors-were asked to act similarly ia ,the country districts. MINING. The driving operations by way of further prospecting the Brunner mine have been going ou for some weeks now, the drive bo far reaching about 400 feet. In tho first 260 feat traces of coal ware discovered, but these entirely disappeared whilst the men < were driving tho next 120 feet. At this limit, however, a likely formation was again entered upon, the traces found giving signs of good coal further on. The present driving contract will bo completed in about four weeks. COAL CREEK RAILWAY. , Some ‘ little difficulty seems to have arisen iu connection with this railway, and tho works are not being pushed on so rapidly as was anticipated. The bridge over the Grey Eiver has not yet bean commenced, though the contractors along the railway formation-are all ia a fair way of completing their portions of the line. Possibly tho present complication a will be speedily settled, an Messrs Guinness and Taylor, representing the Groymouth shareholders in the company, have mado a special visit to Wellington for the purpose of attending a full meeting of the Directors there. ' OPERA COMPANY.Pollard’o Lilliputian Opera Company paid a return visit to the town this weak, and played a season of four nights, producing Alißdba, The Gondoliers and Mad,amc Favart. They were again moat successful. PERSONAL. A few friends of Mr A. H. Todd, teller of tho Union Bank of Australia here, presented him with ahacdsomesilver-mounted pipe on Saturday evening last as a small memento" of tho respect and esteem, in which he is held by them. Mr Todd, who has been transferred to Wellington, will bq much missed by his many Greymouth friends, especially on the tennis and cricket grounds, Hia place in the bank will be taken by Mr Greenwood, whose lato position will be filled by Mr Parry. GREY V. HOKITIKA. The local cricketers 'journeyed to Hokitika on Saturday to play tho return Association match with the club there. The game was won by tho Grey men by 87 runs on the first ianings, aud thiu result mates both clubs equal in the contest for the President’s trophy. Should Grey succeed in defeating Boss, a final match will have to be played by tho Grey and Hokitika'teams to decide the championship of the Coast. The scores were Holdfeiks, first innings, 32 (none of the team getting into double figures); second innings, 87 for eight wickets (Earrop 38 not out, Chesney is! Beniamin I 5- Grey, first ianings 119 (Pavitt44, Wickss 16, Labatt H,Mowbray H, Perkins 10 being the highest scorers). Bali and Murloy for the winners and Houston for tho losers were the most successful bowlers.
