j VICTORIA RACING CLUB, i [Special to Press Association.] MELBOURNE, March 2. • The weather was beautifully fine for the opening day of the Victoria Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting, and despite the counter attraction of the cricket match, there was a large attendance. The New SouthWales horses made an auspicious start by running into the places in the Hopeful Stakes. The winner, Mr H. Oxenham’a Waterfall, is a raking two-year-old by Niagara, from Little ; Wanzer. The St Lager was a complete surprise. , The Harvester pulled ,up ■much distressed. The Messrs, Miller, who own . Preston, are , doubtful; about starting the St Legcr , winner for the Australian Cup, preferring to reserve him for the Champion Stakes. Betting over the Newmarket Handicap was very spirited.
