ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held yesterday ? present—Messrs Hugo Frisdlander (chairman), C. J. Harper, A. M’Parlane, E. G. Wright, D. Cameron, J. Johnstone, - 35. Richards and D. Williamson. The Chairman’s action in taking stops to bring water from the south to the-apith branch of the Ashburton River was confirmed. Several cases of tampering withwaterraces were reported, and it was resolve&to call upon offenders to give an explanation. On the motion of Mr Wright, seconded by Mr M’Parlane, it was decided to take action under the by-laws, to prevent the water-races being polluted by pigs. It was decided to purchase two truck loads of salt to be supplied to farmers at cost price for the purpose of killing Californian thistles. The Chairman was .authorised' to appoint rangers to impound cattle strayingunithe Ashburton river-bed. On the motion of .Mr Wright,; a,committee was appointed to report ‘uponlthe matter of an increased water supply. The Council accepted an invitation from Mr Allan to inspect the'irrigation works Ac Acton. Mr Wright, pursuant to notice, moreti that members should be . paid their expenses in attending the CooncU’s meetings. ' ■ ■ Mr M’Farlane seconded the. motion, which was carriedunanimou sly., The question- of enlarging, "the waterraces of the county where practicable, -to allow of experiments in. irrigation .being made, was-considered in committee.
