A beautiful morning attracted a large concourse of touts to Plemington to witness the final gallops of the Newmarket Handicap and St Leger candidates. Amongst those present was Mr Septimus Miller, who expressed himself confident that Preston would win the Australian Cup, Portunatus covered the fastest sis furlongs this morning, the time being Imin 17$sec, but Vanitas only took a quarter of a‘second longer oVor the same distance. Hova had a shade; of &n advantage- over Disparity at the conclusion of a six-furlong dash, which they negotiated in excellent style in Imin ISsec, Coolalta and Waterfall proved themselves a pair of fast youngsters , by skipping over five furlongs in Imin 6sec. Donation executed a sterling gallop over a mile and a half in 2min 43sec, moving in beautiful style. Cobbitfcy spun over the St Leger distance in good style and fair time. Betting was more animated last night. Bessie M’Carthy remained firm at 100 to 14 (off) and 100 to 10 was taken about Vanitas. Wakawatea, who was galloped on in the Oakleigh*Plate Race, and has been eased in his work in consequence, has weakened considerably, and 100 to 7 is freely offered about him. The Barbarian and Broken Hill have been well backed at 100 to 5, whilst Havoc has been stoutly supported for the Australian Cup down to lOOto 12, The following horses are left in the KE \VMAKKET HANDICAP, of 750 so vs ; second horse 150 bovs and third 75 sovs from the stake.
