THE CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA.

.Judges—Messrs S. Heaton Rhodes and J. S. Monck; Umpires— Messrs J. J. Collins and F. E. Hyman; Starter—Mi H. Y. Styche. The Christchurch Regatta. Club was 1 favoured with magnificent weather yesterday for its, annual regatta, held this yeai 1 at Sumner. There was a very large : - attendance. With, a .calm.day and smooth water nothing was wanting to make, the affair a success from, a public jpoint of view except good racing, and this-was witnessed in several events. The great race of the day—the Senior Fours-produced a determined struggle between Lyttelton and Union. The latter fell away towards the finish, being unable to respon&tothe champions’ challenge, and suffered defeaifcby a length. In the Maiden Double Sculls Star rowed a fine race for three parts.iof the distance, and Union at the finish made a bold bid for aecondvhonours. The winners were undoubtedly the beaticrew, and fully upheld the reputation they gained at the Lyttelton and Akaroa regattas for gamenees and speed. The Maiden Fours was a very easy thing for Canterbury, who,ran away from the others at the start, and were not pressed afterwards. There was a good for third place, which resulted ratherjcuriously, one crew going off the course and another fouling a stake that marked the course. This was due to the coxswains becoming excited at an awkward point. In the Ladies’ Plate, at half a mile the race seemed over, as ’ Canterbury held swnice lead, and ware apparently within themselves. From having tb© best water at the start, however, the.crew, .for the last four furlongs,<throughi notbemg able to secure a lead enable them to take Wairewa’a position, . were called upon to row against apretty strong incoming tide. Served by ‘ position, and rowing with great gameness, considering their inexperience, the Wairewa men gradually wore their opponents down and gained a very popular victory. Union Sared to be winning the Senior Pairi ar easily when the crew went off the course, .an example followed by Canterbury, who were rowing in the others’wake, and who thus lost a splendid chance of annexing the event. The events were got off to , time ; there was noXhitch of any kind?Hn ; , the .affrwjgementicoM -

in hia sfcftrting.and Messrs R." H. Rhodes and J. S. Monck, although witnessing several excellent finishes, had none so close aa to heed any hesitation on. their •part in giving their verdicts.! The umpires had nothing to do beyond enjoy the racing. The following are details : TTTOTnTS DOUBLE SCULLS (with coxswain). J £6and trophy presented hy B.
