GOVERNMENT HOLIDAYS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l should like to inquire, through you, ’ who is responsible for the blunder whereby the fact that the Government offices in Christchurch were to be closed on regatta day, was only announced in the papers published on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. A considerable section of the population does not see the evening papers, and could, therefore, only be reached by the morning advertisement, which is quite too abort a notice to be compatible with the public convenience. From the point: of view of those who might have arranged or might require to attend the Government offices on business, such' brief notice is an act of grave discourtesy, and implies a disregard of their requirements which cannot fail to cause considerable dissatisfaction. As regards the officials affected, it simply deprives them of the chance of spending a day out of town, and renders the holiday of little value to them. Doubtless the authorities in Wellington look sharply enough after their own interests in such matters, but when .it is only a provincial office, apparently the convenience both of the public and its servants is to be disregarded. Is this one of the benefits of centralisation P —I am, &o. H.A.D.
